Grandma’s “Lose 10 lbs in 3 days” Diet

Grandma’s “Lose 10 lbs in 3 days” Diet

Happy New Year Friends,

Traditionally each January I like to go through my closets and kitchen cabinets and purge unwanted items that I no longer need.  While doing so, I was looking through several of my cookbooks and found a folder with old newspaper clippings and handwritten recipes from my late Grandmother.  She was a collector of recipes and being from the south, she had some recipes that were classic.

While leafing through the handwritten recipes, I found a piece of paper that read “Lose 10 lbs in 3 days diet”.  This “diet” claims if you follow these steps for three days you will lose 10 pounds, and if you stick with it you could lose up to 40 pounds in 1 month.  Sounds, amazing right? Well, let’s just say it does not resemble any popular diet I have ever heard of. I believe this diet was written well over 30 years ago by my Grandmother and she most likely copied it from something she had read. We all know how much dieting has changed over the years, and perhaps someone out there can testify to this diet.  I thought this would be a fun read for the new year and please always consult your physician if you plan to start any new diet. 😉

Lose 10 lbs in 3 days

“Must be followed exactly”

Day 1:

Breakfast:  1 slice dry toast w/2 tablespoons peanut butter, 1/2 grapefruit, black coffee or tea

Lunch:  1/2 cup tuna, 1 slice dry toast, coffee or tea

Dinner:  2 slices (any type) meat, about 3 ounces. 1 cup string beans, 1 cup beets.

Dessert:  1 small apple, 1 cup vanilla ice cream – no other!

Day 2:

Breakfast:  1 egg, 1 banana, 1 slice dry toast, black coffee or tea

Lunch:  1 cup cottage cheese, 5 saltine crackers

Dinner:  2 hot dogs, 1 cup broccoli, 1/2 cup carrots

Dessert:  1/2 banana, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

Day 3:

Breakfast:  5 saltine crackers, sliced cheddar cheese, 1 small apple, black coffee or tea

Lunch:  1 hard-boiled egg, 1 slice dry toast

Dinner:  1 cup tuna, 1 cup beets, 1 cup cauliflower

Dessert:  1/2 cantaloupe, 1/2 cup vanilla ice cream

Do not change or substitute anything. It works on a chemical breakdown and is proven. Salt and pepper may be used but no other seasonings. This diet is to be used only 3 days at a time.  In three days you will lose 10 pounds if you stick to it.  After 3 days go back to a normal diet, but don’t overdo it.  After 4 days of normal eating start back on the 3-day diet.  You can lose up to 40 pounds in a month if you stick to it.

Remember: This is a “safe” diet.  No snacking between meals

40 LBS IN A MONTH! What? I’m not a dietician, but for some reason, this doesn’t seem like the healthiest way to lose weight.  Oh, how I would love to be able to justify eating a bowl of vanilla ice cream each day or to have 2 hotdogs.  I would also love to see the statistics of the “chemical breakdown”.  How does this work?  Perhaps if we omitted the toast, crackers, process meat, and ice cream, we might be on to something.

I feel like this it’s a great little gem that showed up in my kitchen to remind me that my eating habits are pretty darn good and to remember; diets aren’t always the best solution to losing weight, making healthy lifestyle changes is a better way to go.

I hope you enjoyed this fun read today and if you have heard of any silly fad diets leave a comment below, I would love to hear from you!

Cheers to healthy living!
