The Irish Martini

The Irish Martini

Whether you’re Irish or not you probably have heard of the phrase “the luck of the Irish”. But have you ever wondered where that phrase came from?  Being part Irish myself, I figured I should probably find out the answer.

After a little bit of research I came across Edward T. O’Donnell, an Associate Professor of History at Holy Cross College and author of 1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History.  According to O’Donnell, he writes: “During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish-American birth.”  So anytime someone would strike gold in the early mining years they would say “you have the luck of the Irish.”

Feeling pretty lucky myself, I decided I would like to make an Irish cocktail this year that featured Baileys Irish Cream. I love a good Irish coffee after-dinner drink, and today I’m taking that idea and making a martini instead.  This is a very quick and easy cocktail to prepare, and I hope it will bring you “the luck of the Irish” after you enjoy it!

Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you,

May the wind be always at your back,

May the sun shine warm upon your face,

The rains fall soft upon your fields and,

Until we meet again,

May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
