The end of summer is approaching us fast and we are getting ready for the cool crisp air, pumpkin spice, and warm toasty fires. This is the time of year when I get inspired to start baking, decorating, and fill our home up with delicious aromas. One simple way I like to bring the aromas of the season into my home is by making my own simmering potpourri. It’s an easy craft you can do in an afternoon and you can store your dried ingredients for several months in an airtight container.
The combination of ingredients I enjoy using is dried oranges (how-to here), cinnamon, and fresh rosemary. However, you can get creative with your ingredients, for example; dried lemons, lavender, and vanilla extract. Or for a more holiday scent try dried oranges, dried cranberries, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, and pine branches. There are so many different and unique combinations you can use, just experiment, and have fun.
Homemade Simmering Potpourri
Homemade simmering potpourri will fill your home with wonderful aromas and can be made by using any combination of ingredients you have on hand.
Ingredients
- 4 dried orange slices
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 fresh rosemary sprig
Directions
- Step 1 Place ingredients in a small simmering pot filled halfway with water
- Step 2 Place pot on a burner, turn to the lowest setting and bring water to a simmer
- Step 3 Continue to add water as needed
- Step 4 Do not allow ingredients to remain on the burner unattended
Homemade simmering potpourri makes for a great hostess gift as well. Simply place your dried ingredients in an airtight container, such as a mason jar, write the instructions on a tag, tie it with ribbon, and your gift is complete.
