If a picture is worth 1000 words, then what is a memory worth?

If a picture is worth 1000 words, then what is a memory worth?

I’ve been asking myself this question lately, “If a picture is worth 1000 words, then what is a memory worth?”  It seems to me if it’s a good memory it would be priceless. Additionally, in the era of selfie sticks and social media posts, is it absolutely necessary to have a picture of a moment to prove it happened? That question led me to think of the following:  If one is able to be fully present without the distractions of a cellphone, one may discover a picture cannot capture the scent of the ocean air, the feeling of a cool breeze across your face, or the sound of laughter from your loved ones.  These are the types of things that can be captured by a fond memory and revisited just like looking at a picture.

A couple of weeks ago I wanted a change from our day-to-day home routine and I asked my husband if we could take the family for a picnic to Lake Erie. It was a gorgeous day! We found the perfect picnic table right alongside the bluffs so we could enjoy the scenery.  After we finished our lunch, we headed down the trail which led us to the shoreline.  The waves on the lake were calm and the wind was mild. My son and daughter both started climbing on top of large boulders, which had huge chunks of quartz embedded on all sides. I found myself sitting on one of those boulders while watching my family enjoy this wonderful day.  I realized, at that moment, I wasn’t reaching for my phone to capture a single photo, and it was okay.  All I wanted to do was to focus my attention on my children who were laughing at the waves splashing and getting them wet and watch their Dad show them how far he can make stones skip across the waves.  It was a picture-perfect moment and a picture-perfect day, of which I didn’t capture any of it on my phone. I just sat there, observed, and absorbed the sounds and feelings of that precious moment.

We are all living in unprecedented times, and our daily routines have changed dramatically.  For many of us, we are not able to visit our loved ones, host dinner parties, travel, or meet up with our friends.  We all have had to make adjustments in our daily lives and routines to accommodate our new “normal”, and it has not been easy.  This time in our lives will leave a lasting impression on us, and we will get through it. My wish is for each person who has taken the time to read this post is that you have a special moment with your family, your friends, or even yourself.  Take it all in, live in the moment, and enjoy. Don’t feel bad if you don’t capture a photo of it, just be grateful for the precious moment you are experiencing and for the priceless memory you have created.

I wish you all continued health, happiness, and many lasting memories ahead!

Thank you,
